Penny Arcade sends an open letter to EA and Microsoft today. In case you’re not up to date on the live game wars, there’s a battle going on between the XBOX Live single service for the console business model, and the service per publisher model happening in PS2 land. At the moment, the PS2 business model is getting a lot of love…mostly from people who haven’t experienced live.
The bottom line, for me at least, is what happened this weekend. Sarah picked up my pre-ordered copy of Rainbox 6 III while I was away at PDC and had it opened and ready for me. I popped it in on Saturday, typed in my password and boom I was ready to play online. Read that again…I typed in my password and boom, I was ready to play. If I’d already convinced Morgan to buy RS3 I could have immediately checked to see if he was online.
I can’t imagine having to sign up for an account with every publisher who happens to make a game I actually enjoy. Not to mention having to give out my personal information and credit card info…There are tons of other great things that having a single service allows, but exploring those will be left as an exercise for the reader. I need to head home so I can frag some people!
