An interesting column about the mess in Haiti

“With friends like these” was a great read for me as I try to make heads or tails of what’s been going on in Haiti. I really don’t understand why we’ve sat back and let a duly elected leader be removed by a coup…even if there were questions about his validity of his election. Should armed men have attacked Washington D.C. after Dubya won a questionable victory in 2000? As long as stable democratic power transfers aren’t allowed to become a cultural habit, Haiti will continue to suffer.

I wonder if Aristide’s deciding to rebuff the advances of the WTO and the IMF had anything to do with the fact that we haven’t supported him?
